Abstract

ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: This review was conducted to know the exact impact of pentraxin 3 as a biomarker and its use as a prognostic factor in cardiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS:A systemic literature review was conducted using key words "pentraxin","pentraxin 3","PTX","biomarker"."Inflammatory biomarker", "assay", "prognostic factor" in years between 2004-2013. DISCUSSION: Pentraxin3 (PTX3) was found to be having a great deal of significance in cardiology as it was associated with cardiac disease progression and severity. Different sources of PTX3 production and its selectivity for myocardial inflammatory response is well established. The eligibility and Purpose of using PTX3 as a biomarker is that it’s being produced from dendritic cells and CRP is being produced from liver which also responds to other inflammatory processes. PTX3 legible superiority against other biomarker like CRP is better proved. The association of PTX3 with the severity of the myocardial injury was also found and stated. Studies concurring to the statement were also listed out in the review. CONCLUSION: In conclusion PTX3 level was found to be useful as a biomarker for myocardial injury and it can also be used as a prognostic factor for any myocardial injury.
