A longitudinal study on body composition, metabolic profiles and blood pressure adjusted for biosocial covariates in a rural elderly population of west bengal, india

Abstract

Background: Virtually no study existed on body composition, metabolic profiles and blood pressure adjusted for bio-social covariates among a rural elderly population in India. Objective: The present study was aimed to study the body composition, metabolic profiles and blood pressure adjusted for age sex education occupation and BMI among rural elderly population in West Bengal, India. Materials and Methods: A total of 254 participants aged 55 and 70 years took part in this longitudinal study. Anthropometric measures were collected using standard techniques. Metabolic profiles and blood pressure were also measured. All measured were taken twice in a gape of one year. Results: partial co-relation (adjusted for age, sex, education, occupation and BMI) between body composition, metabolic profiles and blood pressure revealed no significant association for them in either Phase I or II. Conclusion: Increasing age did not warrant decrease in cardiovascular disease risk factors and in turn demands a comprehensive attention to reduce CVD burden among elderly population.
